What Is a Non-Articulating Borescope?

A non-articulating borescope camera is an inspection device whose camera head cannot be steered. The lens, sensor and LED illumination sit at a fixed angle, and the operator aims the instrument by positioning the probe itself. Removing the bending section shortens the tip, reduces wear points and lowers cost, which is why fixed-view units dominate high-volume service and production inspection programs.

QBH builds these systems in-house, from snake tube extrusion through camera-module bonding to final optical verification.

Semi-Rigid, Flexible and Shape-Retaining Probe Options

Probe behaviour decides whether an inspection is repeatable. Each construction is produced to order.

Semi-rigid probe

Enough column strength to push forward without buckling, while still bending around a light curve.

Flexible probe

Follows an existing channel where the path is already defined and the probe does not need to hold shape.

Shape-retaining probe

Bends by hand and stays in position, allowing a repeatable viewing angle across a production inspection routine.

Detachable probe

Field-swappable probes are available on select models, including the KS02 and KS05.

Non-Articulating vs. Articulating Borescopes

Both formats have a place in a distributor catalogue. The access path decides which one to quote.

Criterion Fixed view Steerable
Viewing direction Fixed at the camera head Steered on site by the operator
Probe construction Fewer moving parts in the tip Control wires and bending section
Typical use Known access path, repeatable survey Unknown cavity, target behind an obstruction
Service exposure Lower mechanical wear Bending section is a wear item
Unit cost Lower at comparable image quality Higher for the same optics
Training Minimal Operator technique matters

How to Choose a Non-Articulating Borescopes

After choosing the probe type and display format, confirm the dimensions, working distance, image requirements, operating environment and recording needs before selecting a specific QBH model. These six specifications help turn a general inquiry into a clear purchasing requirement.

Parameter Question to Ask Why It Matters QBH Configuration Guidance
Probe Diameter What is the smallest opening the camera must pass through? A small-diameter borescope must pass through the access point without blocking the route while still providing the image quality, lighting and durability required for inspection. Confirm the complete camera-head diameter, probe tolerance and available diameter options for the selected QBH model rather than relying only on the nominal probe size.
Cable Length How far is the inspection target from the actual entry point? Insufficient reach prevents access, while unnecessary cable length can make the probe more difficult to guide, position and control. Standard and custom working lengths are available by model for portable, long-reach inspection camera and long-length borescope applications.
Working Distance
& Focus
How close will the camera head be to the surface that needs inspection? Working distance and depth of field determine whether the inspection target will remain clear when the camera is close to a valve, cylinder wall, connector or other internal surface. Confirm the verified working distance and depth-of-field range for the selected camera head, especially for close-range inspection applications.
Image & Lighting How dark, reflective or detailed is the inspection area? Camera resolution, illumination and surface reflectivity affect how much usable visual detail can be captured inside dark or metallic cavities. Confirm camera resolution, image output and adjustable LED lighting levels for the required inspection distance and surface condition.
Environment &
Waterproof Scope
Will the probe contact water, coolant, oil or cleaning fluids? Waterproof protection may apply only to the probe or camera head rather than to the complete inspection device. Confirm the waterproof inspection camera rating, protected components, sealing scope and operating conditions for the selected model before use in wet environments.
Recording &
Documentation
Are photos or videos required for maintenance reports, inspection evidence or comparison? Recording allows technicians to document defects, compare inspection results and share visual evidence with customers, maintenance teams or quality-control personnel. Confirm whether the selected recording borescope supports photo capture, video recording, storage, file export and the required media format.

Custom Probe and Snake-Tube Engineering

Custom snake tube construction, custom probe diameter and custom cable length are produced in-house rather than sourced. That keeps stiffness, sealing and bend radius consistent across repeat orders, and allows a buyer to standardise one probe geometry across an entire product family.

  • Tube diameter and wall stiffness to drawing
  • Jacket material and chemical exposure
  • Connector and strain relief design
  • Repeat-order dimensional consistency

Non-Articulating Borescope FAQ

What is a non-articulating borescope?

A non-articulating borescope is an inspection camera whose viewing direction is fixed at the camera head. The operator positions the probe itself instead of steering the tip, which keeps the tip simpler and more durable.

When is a fixed-view borescope the better choice?

When the access path is known and repeatable—for example, a spark-plug port, fixed housing or in-line inspection station—a fixed-view unit can provide comparable image quality at a lower unit cost than a steerable scope.

What is the difference between semi-rigid and flexible probes?

A semi-rigid probe has enough column strength to push forward and hold a bend, while a flexible probe follows an existing channel. Shape-retaining probes stay where they are positioned for repeatable viewing angles.

What probe diameters can QBH manufacture?

Available diameters, including small-diameter builds, are configured according to each project. Confirm the required specification with QBH before ordering.

Can the cable length be customised?

Yes. Standard and extended cable lengths can be produced to order. Minimum and maximum available lengths depend on the selected probe and product configuration.

Are the probes waterproof?

Sealing performance and IP rating vary by model and probe construction. Confirm the waterproof specification for the selected configuration before publishing or placing an order.

Do you support private-label and OEM programs?

Yes. QBH supports custom logo printing, packaging, firmware languages and product colourways. Minimum order quantities and logo-customisation terms depend on the selected model and project requirements.

What certifications are available?

Certification scope may include CE, FCC, RoHS and ISO-related documentation. Availability must be confirmed for each model and destination market.
